RousayLap - Run, Walk or Cycle around this amazing island

An annual event held every August, the Rousay Lap takes in 13.1 miles around the island of Rousay. A circular route along tarmaced roads, this is a fantastic opportunity to see the whole island.

More than 70 people usually take part in the Lap, choosing to run, walk or cycle the route. Open to all ages and abilities, and both locals and visitors, the event, which is organised by the Rousay, Egilsay & Wyre Development Trust, is FREE to enter.

When: Saturday 25 August 2012

Route Description: 13.1 miles along the main road around the island. This is a circular route, all on tarmaced roads, with breathtaking views of the island.

Entry Cost: FREE

Registration: You can download an entry form here or you can register on the day. You should report to the registration point (in the Rousay Heritage Centre), 11.15am - 11.45am on the day.

Start: 12pm - perfect for arriving on the 10.40am ferry from Tingwall, and finish in time to board the 5.30pm ferry from Rousay to Tingwall on the Mainland of Orkney

Finish: The finishing time obviously varies greatly - cyclists can get around the island in as little as 45 minutes, but walking generally takes around 4 hours or more. The Red Cross, a volunteer organisation helping out on the day, will be on hand throughout the event, and will do a 'final sweep' of the Lap towards the end of the event to ensure that everyone finishes safely, as everyone must finish/stop by 4.30pm.

Medals/Certificates: Everyone gets a certificate for completing the Lap, with a record of their individual finishing time. Medals will be given to the fastest time in each category of run, walk, cycle, to adults and under-16s, and to locals and 'all-comers' - medals will be awarded at The Pier Restaurant, Rousay, from 4.45pm on the day.
